The name "San Raffaele" originates from the Hebrew word Raf-el, which means "God�s medicine" or "God heals". The San Raffaele hospital is a private Scientific Institute, belonging to the San Raffaele del Monte Tabor Foundation, recognised by the Italian Ministry of Health as a Scientific Institute carrying out biomedical research and clinical activities of relevant national interest (IRCCS). According to the inspiring principles of its founding Organisation, the mission of the San Raffaele is to cure and assist diseased individuals, following the Gospel proposition: "Go, teach, heal". Such a mission is accomplished by focusing every aspect of the Institute�s activities on Man, viewed as an multifaceted entity endowed with inseparable biological, psychological and spiritual elements.

Informations
Foreign Citizens living in Italy may use the Italian Health Service, according to the Law 6 March 1998 n. 40 on presentation of the following documents:

EU Citizens:
� form E111
issued by Health Insurance Scheme in Country of residence

Non EU Citizens:
� health assistance card
issued by ASL (Local Health Autorithy) of present residence or domicile
In absence of the necessary documentation Foreign Citizens may utilize the National Health Service in the following instances:

� need for urgent treatment, also when long-term
� pregnancy and maternity (until the child is 6 months old)
� less than 18 years old
� vaccinations, international prophylaxis, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases

In cases not listed above, the Foreign Citizen must pay for the treatment himself. Payment in Foreign Currency will be accepted.

Support and Care activities
Most clinical services offered by the San Raffaele, both to outpatients and inpatients, are available as part of the services covered by the National Health Plan (S.S.N.) but can also be accessed on a private basis by paying patients. Dedicated employees at the reservation desk provide all the necessary information concerning doctors and their related clinical services, how such services are accessed, the average waiting times, costs and specific locations for each service.

The departments
Clinical and diagnostic services provided by the San Raffaele are structured as Departments and Services. They include most medical and surgical disciplines, ranging from Internal Medicine to General Surgery, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Neurological Surgery, Neurology, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics and Ophthalmology. A fully equipped Emergency Room, associated to an intensive care unit, is operated on a rotational basis by staff clinicians, and is prepared to treat any medical or surgical emergency. Professionals operating in clinical Departments and Divisions include the Division Chief, senior registrars, registrars, head nurses, professional nurses and assistant technicians (OTA), together with auxiliary personnel and administrators. In addition to qualified medical staff, diagnostic and rehabilitation services comprise specialised technical personnel including head technicians, radiology technicians and laboratory technicians.

� By public transport: Underground line 2, Cascina Gobba stop, then Underground railway for San Raffaele (or Bus for Milano 2 for those directed to Dimer).
